Horal - Jaime Sabines

El mar se mide por olas,

el cielo por alas,

nosotros por lágrimas.

El aire descansa en las hojas,

el agua en los ojos,

nosotros en nada.

Parece que sales y soles, nosotros y nada…

Sea is measured in waves,

sky in wings,

and us in tears.

Air rests on the leaves,

water in the eyes,

and us in nothing.

It seems that salts and suns, us and nothing…

Memoir

The theme of this video is memory. I wanted to create a surreal world, a memory place full of symbolism in which the times blend;  A world with a reality outside of time. Life, just like dreams and memories are a sum of perceptions, therefore they are all equally real. “Seeing the universe as a cerebral phenomenon” said Borges.

Deterministic ideas suggest that everything is part of the present situation. The past follows us everywhere, It is always present. Psychological studies show that reality is formed by memories, In the way that we learn by past actions and consequences and we recall them all the time to take action, In other words we are unconsciously always recalling the past. Therefore we are also living in this memory worlds. Also, since we have selective memory, the act of forgetting is as relevant as remembering. Our brain selects the memories based on utility and survival. Language itself is a memory mechanism. Therefore, everything we believe is subjective. In other words, there is not a universal truth or a single system for measuring time.

Memories are not always visual, but sensorial experiences and the memory of them; In other words, a memory is subjected to other senses, like feelings and perceptions making it not an objective memory but more like a fantasy world, from where we control our lives. “ a person thinks , perceives, acts from memory.”

Joan Calduch talks about a sense of permanence underneath the mutation of things.

I started using objects that would transform, or vanish. Objects that symbolize the past in anyway, for example flipping a page of a book backwards. Also, using black backgrounds on where things will appear, symbolizing how memory is selective, and how life is similar to painting on a black canvas, we create our reality by deciding what to paint on it. Moreover, it symbolizes how the present becomes more dense as it accumulates memory and how the past can rule our lives.

In some of my video shoots, I use my photographs as scenarios of these dreamscapes. I went back to work with my old photographs and animate them, to give them a different life, just like how we do when we recall a memory, by traveling back in time to re live a moment in the past and incorporate absence to the present.

The main theme for this project is memory. I want to create a surreal world, a memory place full of symbolism in which the times blend. A world where the past is not gone, and the future already happened, a reality outside of time.
